Brief History

The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), commonly called Northern Cyprus or North Cyprus, is a de facto independent republic located to the North of Cyprus. Just 9 years after the Greek-Cypriot coup, North Cyprus declared their independence on November 15th, 1983. The Greek-Cypriot coup was intended to annex the island to Greece which in turn triggered the Turkish invasion of 1974. North Cyprus'  independence however, is recognized only by Turkey, on which it has become dependent for economic, political and military support. Unfortunately, to the rest of the world and other international communities including the United Nations (UN) and the European Union (EU), the sovereignty of the Republic of Cyprus surpasses the territory of Northern Cyprus.

The Turkish Army maintains force over North Cyprus and this apparently meets with the approval of most of the Turkish-Cypriot population here. However, the Republic of Cyprus regards the Turkish Army as an illegal occupation force and its presence has also been denounced in several United Nations Security Council resolutions. Many attempts to reach a solution to the dispute have futile so far. Kofi Annan of the UN planned to reunite the island in 2004 and his proposal was accepted by majority of the Turkish-Cypriots in a referendum, but a resounding majority of the Greek-Cypriots rejected it altogether.

Although divided, North Cyprus still remains an ideal holiday destination and a fantastic place to visit as it is full of rich and interesting history from ancient times right through to the present.

Capital City & Major Cities

Nicosia is the largest city as well as the capital city of Cyprus. Following the dispute in 1960, Nicosia has been a shared capital, meaning it is the capital of North Cyprus and South Cyprus. Other major cities in North Cyprus include Famagusta, Kyrenia, Karpaz, Iskele and Morphou.

Official Language

The official language in North Cyprus is Turkish, but English is also widely spoken throughout North Cyprus especially due to the constant inflow of tourists year in and out. In the major cities, such as Kyrenia, Famagusta or Nicosia, almost anyone you come across at random can communicate considerably well in understandable English. But worry not when coming to North Cyprus; below is a little Turkish crash course to help you get around when you arrive North Cyprus for the first time.

When calling a North Cyprus number from abroad, you dial 00 (or "+") followed by 90, and then if you're calling a landline you dial 392 followed by the local Cypriot number or if you're calling a mobile number, you dial the mobile number omitting the 1st zero. For example, to dial Mountain View Hotel's reception (landline): 00 90 392 8223454 or to dial our mobile number: 00 90 5338485115
