North Cyprus Taxis

Taxis are easy to find in North Cyprus. They are usually those Mercedes Benz you see in taxi stands at strategic locations; you can hardly miss them. Just like in most European cities, the taxis here in North Cyprus usually operate on a meter system or on a flat rate. The taxis in busy areas like the major cities do not have meters and run on an agreed flat rate.

North Cyprus ‘Dolmuş’

In North Cyprus, there is a special taxi service usually called “Dolmuş” (pronounced as DOLMUSH) where you share a taxi with other passengers. The dolmuş service would take you, as well as other passengers, to their respective destination. The dolmuş service is available in the cities like Kyrenia and Omorfo.

North Cyprus Bus Services

Buses in North Cyprus run usually during the day as from about 6am. They usually run between major cities but become less at nights as from 7pm and during the weekends. In cities like Kyrenia and Famagusta, bus services run till about 11pm at nights. Available buses range from mini 18-seater buses to larger 50-seater buses. The bus sizes vary from city to city because here in North Cyprus, different bus routs are run by different individual transport companies. For example, Ulusoy run from Nicosia to Omorpho and from Omorfo to Lefke, while Çimen Dolmuş runs from Omorfo to Kyrenia.

There are no set time tables for bus departures, but the buses usually depart on a 30 minutes interval or as soon the bus is filled up. The destination of a bus is usually indicated in large prints on a plate in front of the bus, usually it’s origin on the left and final destination on the right. There are general bus stops along the road sides but you can flag a bus to stop if you’re not close to any bus stops, or you can take an ‘oto stop’.

Oto Stop

‘Oto Stop’ is Turkish for “hitchhike”. In the friendliness of this beautiful island, North Cyprus people do give lifts and pick up hitchhikers along the roads. All you need do is place your hand out with a thumbs up, and someone may pick you up. People have hitchhiked around North Cyprus, from one major city to another and within cities. A tip for oto stop: a single person stands a better chance at being picked up than a group of people.
